2017-2018 Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc.(Omicron Omega Chapter) ASCEND℠ Youth Empowerment Program

Dear High School Student,

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Omicron Omega Chapter would like to extend an invitation to you to participate in the sorority’s signature youth enrichment program. ASCEND℠ is designed to motivate, engage, and assist high school students in reaching their maximum potential for college and career readiness by focusing on life, academic, career and character-building skills.
ASCEND℠ stands for Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Engagement, Networking, and Developmental Skills.

Program Criteria

  • The program is open to high school female and male students in grades 9-12.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in grades 9-12 and in good standing.
  • Applicants must maintain a C grade point average.
  • Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a counselor, teacher, or community leader.
  • Applicants should submit a typed personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) that articulates why he or she wants to join ASCEND℠.
  • Applicants must agree to follow the guidelines outlined in the Code of Conduct while participating in the program.
  • Applicants must submit a completed parental consent form, signed by the parent/legal guardian and the student.

Program Goals

  • Address the current challenges faced by students as they prepare to transition from high school to college life or the world of work.
  • Promote achievement among high school students leading to meaningful post-secondary work and careers.
  • Empower students to realize their full potential by connecting with positive coaches to provide guidance, instill self-confidence and provide career direction and encouragement toward their future career path.

The program will kick-off September 23, 2017 and last until June 2018.  During these 10 months, students will be required to attend monthly meetings on weekends.  The meetings will involve workshops, seminars or events that will allow students opportunities to engage with business professionals and meet other students throughout the city.

Application deadline is September 8, 2017. Students will be notified of their acceptance shortly thereafter by email.  Applications may be returned via mail to Omicron Omega Chapter, P. O.
